I’m excited we got to sit down with legendary mastering engineer Howie Weinberg.

Howie has a seemingly endless credit list and over 200 Gold and Platinum selling records under his belt.
With Nirvana’s classic ‘Nevermind’ and U2, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Van Halen, Metallica, Herbie Hancock and Sheryl Crow, Howie has mastered records that – to this day – are considered the sonically best albums of all time.

Drawing from his rich pool of experience ranging from the 70s and Vinyl Mastering through Tape, CDs and finally Digital Formats, Howie gives us a history lesson in mastering, discusses the advantages and shortcomings of different mediums and gives us an outlook on today’s audio industry and production standards.

You’ll get a full tour of his mastering setup, including Speakers, Compressors, Limiters, EQs, Clocks, Converters and more, while Howie talks you through the characteristics of each unit and explains how he likes to use them.

I hope you enjoyed this video! It was truly inspiring to hear an accomplished mastering engineer’s perspective on technology, audio production and different audio formats.

Please leave a bunch of questions and comments below the video, we’ll be back with Howie very soon!

Have a marvellous time recording and mixing,

Warren

  1. Ahahahaha, the man is a legend! It's like he is Joe Pesci's brother! A clone! Damn! I can imagine how it is if you're working on something with this guy. He has a rocket in his ass! I am 100% sure it's a blast with him!

  2. Howie soundtracked my adolescence..! Being a South Yorkshire lad, from '84, I used to wait in Sheffield's Fon Records every Saturday afternoon (usually chatting with Rob Mitchell who went on to found Warp Records, sadly no longer with us) for the latest DefJam 12" white labels to come in from the US. Still got em all. The great thing is, my kid did her degree at BIMM Manchester (2014-17) and who should turn up to do a masterclass – Chuck D! Of course, she was raised on Def Jam. Due to being able to recite every lyric, she got tickets for the PE show later that evening (and lots of selfies with the man himself). Dad was very proud. And jealous. 😉
